Miami Marlins ace is done for the season and it's the worst news possible

Eury Pérez won’t pitch again this season

Eury Perez is one of the best young pitchers in the game. It's absolutely heartbreaking to hear the news today. The season was already going down the drain with perhaps just empty optimism left to replace it. What now? How can the Miami Marlins do without Eury Perez? Is the season basically over now? We're going to have two takes on this...

Eury Perez's injury might as well end the season for the Miami Marlins.

It's hard to know where to begin. Eury Perez was an elite prospect who quickly emerged as untouchable in the Miami Marlins farm system. Eury finally made his debut in the Major Leagues last season. It was certainly worth the wait and all of the hype. He produced a 3.15 ERA/4.11 FIP, with 10.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 19 games and 91.1 innings pitched. The FIP wasn't great, but everything else was legitimately good.

Eury was supposed to be the team's co-ace this season, and the expectation was that he would be on of the players key in bringing The Fish back into the playoffs. It certainly isn't happening now, that the young stud will have to go under the knife. He will now require Tommy John Surgery. He first had issues during Spring Training with his fingernail, it then extended to inflammation in his elbow.

It seemed promising when he wasn't planned to go under the knife. It seemed that maybe enough rest would fix the issue. It turned out to not be the case as he now wil be out for the rest of this season and the early part of next season. There's not much else to add, other than I wish him a speedy recovery. I also don't see how the Miami Marlins make the playoffs at this point. Eury was too crucial for that to happen.

What should The Fish do now? I would suggest looking into why there are so many pitching injuries. I'd also look into improving the farm system and pitching depth. In the meantime, let's hope that there are no issues with Eury's recovery. He deserves to be back as soon as possible. All of that said, the playoffs are no longer a realistic option thsi season.
