Miami Marlins can make a trade for the future
The Trade Deadline is ahead as the Miami Marlins have already made use of the MLB Draft. Time will tell how the team's picks will do, but for now let us divert our attention to the aforementioned deadline. The goal for the team will sadly be to sell at this time, but what about making trades for the future as well? After all, "selling" does typically lead to trades of present players for hopeful future ones...
The Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers can line up on a big trade.
The biggest issue facing The Fish is the state of the lineup. It's not a particularly strong mix and improvements are badly needed. 1B Josh Bell is likely out by the Deadline and is certainly gone after the season. Jake Burger is the likely first baseman of the future, but he can also stick at third base. Either way, would pursuing a long-term upgrade be a bad thing?
The Miami Marlins can make a trade towards the future, by sending some excess pitching... Who would be the target? 1B Spencer Torkelson of the Detroit Tigers! There is an increasing possibility that Detroit will move on from their former top prospect.
Could a "change of scenery" be the answer? He's been worth -1.2 WAR for his performance this season and is currently in the Minor Leagues. He batted a dreadful .201/.266/.330, with 4 home runs and 18 RBI in 54 games and 209 AB. That's terrible production, but last season he batted .233/.313/.446, with 31 home runs and 94 RBI in 159 games and 606 AB.
Spencer Torkelson is a 30 home run bat and had a 91.8 Exit Velocity last season. Granted, this season his EV has dropped to 88.8, but he could potentially get it back up? Either way, would it make sense for The Fish to take a flyer on a recently elite bat? I genuinely think so! Why wouldn't it be a good idea to see if a 30 homer bat can potentially be had for a discount price? To be fair, Detroit probably won't sell low, but it's worth a shot.
