Miami Marlins DFA a reliever and make a trade for a pitcher
Woo-Suk Go we hardly knew you...
There are some interesting news about the Miami Marlins lately, though it may be premature to expect any major positive outcomes. The Fish are now making more moves. How do these moves look going forward? Are they good or bad? Did The Fish make any mistakes?
More roster moves coming from the Miami Marlins.
As the title says, "Woo-Suk Go we barely knew ya". The relief pitcher never pitched a game for the Miami Marlins. Go was a part of a major trade earlier this season, being shipped to The Fish as a kind of salary dump coming from the San Diego Padres.
Woo Suk-Go has not pitched in the Majors to this point, but hasn't had much success in AA with an Diego or in AAA with The Fish. He had a 4.38 ERA with San Diego, and a much better 3.00 ERA with The Fish, though coming with a below average 3.0 K/9. The 25 year old did do well as a closer in South Korea, so maybe some team will take a chance on the righty.
I don't know how Go will do in the Majors, so until he does it's hard for me to say whether it was the right or wrong move for the Marlins. Coming in is recently DFA'd RHP Shaun Anderson. Anderson pitched with the San Francisco Giants from 2019-2020. He split 2021 between the Minnesota Twins, the Baltimore Orioles and the San Diego Padres. He pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022 and the Texas Rangers in 2024.
The righty had a career 5.83 ERA/4.93 FIP, with a strong 8.1 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9. He did this in 65 games and 139.0 innings pitched. Anderson has a 91.3 mph fastball, but the 29 year old's K/BB rate is at least promising. I don't expect much from him based on his age and career track record, but I'm hopeful that he will surprise me and prove to be a "hidden gem" of an acquisition.
As basically a free pick-up, the Miami Marlins have nothing to lose acquiring Shaun Anderson. How Woo-Suk Go does if he pitches in the Majors, will tell us whether his DFA was a smart move.
