Peter Bendix is doing a great job in getting Miami Marlins back on his side. One trade seemed to have gone the other way, but the one on Tuesday.... How can you not praise his work at this point? I wasn't even really a fan of his before this, just giving him a chance. Anyway, how did this trade go?

The Miami Marlins finally traded closer Tanner Scott.

Tanner Scott has emerged as the best closer in the game, despite his underwhelming advanced metrics. Scott has a 3.2 WAR this season, which is the highest among all relief pitchers in 2024. He has a 1.18 ERA/3.24 FIP, with 10.4 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in 44 games and 45.2 innings pitched. He also accumulated 18 saves as the Miami Marlins closer.

Scott's advanced metrics aren't particularly exciting to be honest. The FIP is not of an elite pitcher, just a very good one. The control is pretty bad, especially for a closer. His strikeout rate has actually been in decline since the 2022 season. He had 12.9 K/9 in 2022, 12.0 K/9 in 2023 and 10.4 K/9 now in 2024.

Last season, Tanner Scott had a 2.31 ERA/2.17 FIP, with the aforementioned 12.0 K/9 and a much better 2.8 BB/9 in 74 games and 78.0 innings pitched. Throughout his career, Scott has a 3.63 ERA/3.42 FIP, with 12.0 K/9 and 5.1 BB/9. He always had control issues and his strikeout rate's decline is pretty alarming. The 30 year old is a free agent at the end of the season, and really isn't a good extension candidate.

What did the Miami Marlins get ack for Scott? Well, first of all right-handed RP Bryan Hoeing was traded as well. Hoeing has a 2.70 ERA (5.48 career) and 3.26 FIP (5.11 career), with 7.5 K/9 and 2.7 B/9, in 16 games and 30.0 innings pitched. Hoeing is an interesting arm, but probably will never be an elite arm. Both were traded to the San Diego Padres, who now have an elite bullpen.

So, what was that return again? Minor League RHP Robby Snelling has a very intriguing profile and could rise up the rankings, as he was already the #2 prospect in their system and the #44 prospect on MLB.com! Another prospect 3B Jay Beshears is another intriguing one. The top addition here is RHP Adam Mazur, who could eventually make it to The Fish's rotation. 3B Graham Pauley was their #5 prospect, so San Diego's farm goes down, but The Fish's is definitely going up. Pauley could get a shot at third base as soon as this season!

The Miami Marlins easily won this trade, while San Diego is going all in on a hopeful deep playoff run.
