The 2025 season is the focus for the Miami Marlins and the core is being developed. The core of the next competitive window that is. With the ace on the way back sooner rather than later, things are looking up and it's exciting to think about what could happen, with three Wild Card teams in the mix... One player is really looking good, though he's currently injured.
Xavier Edwards has become a key player for the Miami Marlins.
Every good team needs a good defender at the SS position. Every good team could use a great lead-off man. The Miami Marlins have both in SS Xavier Edwards. Edwards is having a surprisingly good season and truly looks like he might one day even be an MVP candidate. That might sound crazy now, but he has all the skills to be that type of an impact player going forward.
Xavier Edwards is batting an incredible .349/.428/.436, with a home run and 17 RBI in 47 games and 172 AB. He also already has 22 stolen bases. He's a speedster and with these numbers, he could realistically compete for the league lead in stolen bases next season. Cincinnati Reds SS Elly De La Cruz currently leads the league with 61 in 131 games and 503 AB.
The batting average and OBP are of an elite player, though it's clear that Edwards isn't much of a power hitter. It doesn't really matter, as everything else is so good. He has a solid 0.1 dWAR, which should be significantly higher over the course of a full season. We will hopefully see just how much higher next season.
There are some negatives with Edwards as well. He currently has an 85.8 EV which isn't pretty good, but he isn't a power hitter so that isn't surprising. The bigger issue is the .413 BABIP as it implies a lower batting line next season. He did however have a .359 BABIP last season, which implies that he may just be a high BABIP type of hitter. I still see him as someone batting over .300.
Overall, Xavier Edwards looks like a star and the Miami Marlins are in a good place at SS.
