Miami Marlins make another pitching transaction
There are some exciting possibilities with some Miami Marlins hitters. There are also questions and hopes with some pitchers. In the meantime, The Fish have been making depth moves on the 40-man roster. These moves may not seem like much at first glance, but can end up being vital in the long run. This one fits that bill...
Another roster move has been made by the Miami Marlins today.
Right-handed relief pitcher Michael Petersen is joining the Miami Marlins. He was claimed from the Los Angeles Dodgers today by The Fish. Interestingly, Petersen is actually from the UK. He's also 30 years old and made his debut in the Major Leagues this season. It wasn't an inspiring debut and that is pretty much why the Dodgers waived him in the first place.
Michael Petersen pitched to an unsightly 6.43 ERA with an almost matching 6.32 FIP. He had an OK 7.1 K/9, but an untenable 5.1 BB/9. He got these results in 11 games and 14.0 innings pitched. These results along with his age and lack of a track record in the Majors, do make you wonder if he'll ever do anything to actually help The Fish.
Is there any silver lining to Petersen? Actually yes. He put up video game type of numbers in LA's AAA system this season. He pitched to a 1.64 ERA with 12.0 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 35 games and 33.0 innings pitched. That's pretty good to say the least. Of course let's not forget that he's a lot older than most rookies. It's still promising enough to keep him around for depth.
Fellow righty reliever Brett De Geus has been designated for assignment. De Geus pitched to a dreadful 6.35 ERA this season. He did have a much better 3.36 FIP. His 6.4 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 however have been unremarkable. He did this in just 7 games and 5.2 innings pitched for the Miami Marlins this season. Th2 26 year old has a career 7.17 ERA/4.83 FIP, with 7.2 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9.
These are just depth moves, so I don't have much hope. I am however intrigued by what Michael Petersen can bring to the table.
