Edward Cabrera is probably the most frustrating Miami Marlins starting pitcher. The Fish made a lot of roster moves lately, and there are some interesting starting pitchers who recently received starts as well. Cabrera however is still in the mix and his future is very much in question. Where does he stand in the future of the team?
Edward Cabrera has an unclear future with the Miami Marlins.
The starting pitching mix for 2025 is pretty full for the Miami Marlins... Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo, Ryan Weathers have set spots at this point. This basically just leaves one spot and besides Cabrera, there's Braxton Garrett, Max Meyer and perhaps even Adam Oller in the mix.
With so many pitchers in the rotation mix, there's a serious question about where Edward Cabrera fits in at this point. He had a dominant start on Sunday against the division leading Philadelphia Phillies, however he still has a 4.88 ERA/4.87 FIP for the season, with a typically impressive 9.8 K/9 and typically disappointing 4.7 BB/9. He just can't seem to get his control steady. He has a career 5.2 BB/9 rate.
Cabrera has to get his control in order first, as otherwise he's a very shaky addition to the rotation. The frustrating thing is that he's capable of pitching like an ace against top offenses. As once again he proved on Sunday. It's also interesting to mention, that despite his advanced metrics, he did once pitch to excellent results. Back in the 2022 season, he pitched to a 3.01 ERA in 14 games and 71.2 innings pitched. He did however have a 4.59 FIP.
So what happens now? Next year's Spring Training will decide who gets the final rotation spots. Edward Cabrera will certainly be in the mix, and if he has enough good starts, he will certainly be able to win a spot in the rotation. That said, he's not guaranteed to hold it all season, and there's a serious question over whether he might even be a change of scenery candidate in the near future. In other words, the Miami Marlins could trade him.
