Miami Marlins surprisingly DFA one of the team's starters
The Miami Marlins made a potentially game-changing call-up earlier today promoting 2B Connor Norby. This came after yet another promotion, on the pitching side of things. The unfortunate news is that someone had to come off the Major League roster for this to work. That someone has now been designated for assignment. I'm talking about 3B Emmanuel Rivera.
Emmanuel Rivera of the Miami Marlins has been designated for assignment.
It probably shouldn't be much of a surprise that the Miami Marlins decided to part ways with Emmanuel Rivera. The third baseman has a -0.5 WAR this season. He's also batting just .214/.294/.269, with 1 home run and 15 RBI in 96 games and 201 AB. The only real positive here has been his 0.3 dWAR. He was pretty good defensively in other words. It's just his offense that made him borderline unplayable at the end of the day.
The 28 year old Rivera was a 2015 19'th round pick by the Kansas City Royals, who played for that team from 2021-2022. He was then traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, with whom he played from 2022-2023. On April 2 this year, The Fish bought him for cash from Arizona for depth at third base. Who knew that he would actually end up becoming a starter at the position. Jake Burger is likely to step back in, after basically being moved to the DH spot and occasional first base duty.
Emmanuel Rivera never really impressed with the bat. His career batting line is just .239/.302/.354. His best season came in 2023 with Arizona. That season he batted .261/.314/.358, with 4 home runs and 29 RBI in 86 games and 257 AB. It wasn't a great performance for him, but he was worth 0.3 WAR, which is surely better than the horrible -0.5 WAR that he's been worth this season.
The Miami Marlins will obviously not miss Emmanuel Rivera, who will now be exposed to waivers to the rest of the Majors. If no team claims him, he's able to reject a demotion to the Minor Leagues and choose free agency. He's able to do this due to his three years of Major League service.
