Miami Marlins owner Bruce Sherman made it clear that GM Kim Ng will have resources at the Trade Deadline. I hope that The Fish will consider making a splash... but small improvements can make a big difference too. We now know that there is an actual target for the team to pursue. That player is none other then the division rival Washington Nationals third baseman Jeimer Candelario.
The Miami Marlins are interested in Washington Nationals third baseman Jeimer Candelario.
Third base hasn't been a good position for the Miami Marlins this season. Jean Segura is currently batting .223/.285/.277 this season, and while things are looking better for him, an upgrade is necessary. Jeimer Candelario could be that upgrade for The Fish. Will the division rivals make the actual trade?
Jeimer Candelario debuted in 2016 with the Chicago Cubs, and batted .091/.286/.091 in 5 games and 14 AB. He split 2017 between Chicago and the Detroit Tigers (after being traded). He batted .283/.359/.425 in 38 games and 127 AB. He played for Detroit from 2017 to 2022. From 2018 to 2022, he batted .239/.320/.401 in 563 games and 2045 AB. He once hit 19 home runs in 2018 for them.
Candelario's best season according to WAR was in 2021, when he had 3.7 WAR. He batted .271/.351/.443, with 16 home runs and 67 RBI in 149 games and 557 AB. The on-base percentage was definitely very impressive here, though the rest of the stats look solid but not impressive. Jeimer's defense has been solid as well throughout his career for the most part.
This season Jeimer Candelario is batting .257/.334/.478, with 15 home runs and 47 RBI. H's currently worth 2.8 WAR. He's definitely going to be on eof the top players available at the Trade Deadline. The best part is that he's a free agent at the end of the season, which means that he shouldn't be too expensive to acquire. He should definitely not cost any of the team's top prospects.
Should the Miami Marlins target Jeimer Candelario? He would definitely be an upgrade over Jean Segura so yes Kim Ng should.
