Miami Marlins vs New York Mets series takeaways
The Miami Marlins won a recent series against the Minnesota Twins and made history along the way. Unfortunately, The Fish were unsuccessful in a road series against the New York Mets that just ended last night. On Friday, the team lost 9-3 in the series opener. This was followed by a 5-2 loss on Saturday and finally a 7-2 win on Sunday. Let's take a look at what happened, and if there is anything that we can take away from this disappointing series.
The Miami Marlins lost another series to the New York Mets.
Edward Cabrera was disappointing again, giving up 2 runs and 7 walks in 2.2 innings pitched. He did have 4 strikeouts, but his career-long walk issues are becoming a real concern. Cabrera has the strikeout ability of a true ace. If he gets his control fixed, he will be an elite starter. He did have a 3.01 ERA in 71.2 innings pitched last season to show a preview of that potential. The problem is getting that control fixed, and that's up to the coaches.
Speaking of disappointing starting pitchers, Trevor Rogers was just as bad, giving up 3 runs and 4 hits in 4.2 innings pitched. He also gave up 2 walks. On the plus side, he did have 5 strikeouts and was doing well until he gave up the home run that ruined his start. Just like with Cabrera though, I'm holding out hope that his next start will be better... and also luckier. If Rogers and Cabrera don't get back on track, we could be in for a long season unfortunately.
CF Jazz Chisholm Jr. made some good plays in CF and stood out in the win on Sunday, as he went 2-4 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases. I firmly believe in Jazz once he gets going this season. 1B Garrett Cooper is seemingly matching his All-Star first half from last season with a .324/.361/.676 batting line so far this season. Will he keep this up all season long? I hope so. If he does, then The Fish have a realistic shot at doing significantly better than last season. Finally, LF Bryan De La Cruz went 2-2 with a home run and 4 RBI on Sunday. Is he finally back after a slow start? Let's hope so!
