Should the Miami Marlins pursue this OF?

The Oakland Athletics designated RF Ramon Laureano for assignment. They're basically putting him on waivers, and if no team claims him, he's getting demoted down to the Minor Leagues. If he's claimed, then some team will basically be getting him for nothing. It's important to note that he's not one of the reported Miami Marlins targets that wasn't acquired at the Trade Deadline. Were The Fish even interested in him at all? Or would he end up demoted if acquired too?

Should the Miami Marlins acquire Ramon Laureano from the Oakland Athletics?

Ramon Laureano is capable of playing all OF positions, though RF maybe the best fit for him. The 29 year old right-handed hitter debuted in 2018 for the Oakland Athletics. He batted .288/.358/.474 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI, in 48 games and 156 AB. That was an excellent debut. He followed that up in 2019 with a .288/.340/.521 batting line, with 24 home runs and 67 RBI in 123 games and 434 AB. At this point Laureano looked like a potential star, and would've been a major trade chip for the then playoff contending team.

The shortened 2020 season saw the beginning of a drop-off for Ramon Laureano. He batted .213/.338/.366 with 6 home runs and 25 RBI in 54 games and 183 AB. Could he improve on those results in 2021? That season he batted .246/.317/.443, with 14 home runs and 39 RBI in 88 games an 341 AB. The answer was basically "not really". Something was wrong as Laureano could neither stay healthy or return to his 2018-2019 numbers.

In 2022, Ramon Laureano batted .211/.287/.376, with 13 home runs and 34 RBI in 94 games and 346 AB. He was going from bad to worse and things just were not looking good for the now rebuilding team. In 2023, Laureano batted .213/.280/.364, with 6 home runs and 21 RBI in 64 games and 225 AB.

So should the Miami Marlins claim Ramon Laureano? I'm a fan of having depth, so I would take the chance on him, even though there's no starting spot available for him at the moment. Injuries happen however, and there's at least a slight chance that he can be useful.
