The Miami Marlins could use some pitching help and starting pitching help especially is a priority. There's actually one starting pitcher who is still available in free agency. Who is it? None other than future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer! Peter Bendix should go after him though Scherzer may probably be out of the Marlins' price range, but what if? Let's see why it makes sense.
Max Scherzer should be signed by the Miami Marlins.
The Miami Marlins need starting pitching help and there's quite a big name available in free agency. As mentioned earlier that would be Max Scherzer. Now, I'm going to be honest Scherzer will probably prefer to sign with a contending team. He also might not want to take a pay cut. That said, he would get to pitch in a more or less pitcher's park and then get to go to a guaranteed contending team at the Trade Deadline.
As I said earlier, Scherzer is a guaranteed future Hall of Famer with a career 74.5 WAR. His prime took place with the Washington Nationals, from 2015 to 2019 as he pitched to a 2.80 ERA/2.86 FIP, with 11.8 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 170 games and 1118.0 innings pitched. He also won the World Series with the team in 2019. He was traded mid-season in 2020 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was elite with LA, pitching to a 1.98 ERA/1.96 FIP, with 11.7 K/9 and 1.1 BB/9 in 11 games and 68.1 innings pitched.
Scherzer hasn't been as good shortly afterward. In his last two seasons in 2023 and 2024 with the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. He pitched to a 3.77 ERA/4.32 FIP, with 10.3 K.9 and 2.7 BB/9 with the Mets and Texas, in 27 games and 152.2 innings pitched. In 2024 with Texas, he pitched to a 3.95 ERA/4.18 FIP, with 8.3 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 9 games and 43.1 innings pitched.
You can clearly see that Max Scherzer is in decline and he's of course already 40 years old. This means that if the demand is low enough, maybe the Miami Marlins really can jump in....
