The Miami Marlins badly need starting pitching help. I already looked at some interesting options that of course didn't happen. There are still free agent starting pitchers that the team could sign, and one of those options happens to be none other than Kyle Gibson. Peter Bendix might already be looking at him in fact. He is actually a valid option for the team as well.
Kyle Gibson could be a legitimate option for the Miami Marlins.
Kyle Gibson can help the Miami Marlins resolve the team's need for starting pitching. Why not? Gibson is a proven veteran team leader, who can solidly eat innings and be a great return on investment. The best part about him is that he's also pretty cheap. He shouldn't cost much more than $5-7 million on a one-year deal.
The reason why Kyle Gibson is so inexpensive, is because he's already 37 years old. He also has a career 4.52 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in his 12 year career. Gibson was a typical inning-eater in the 2024 season. He pitched to a 4.24 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 8.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 30 games and 169.2 innings pitched. It obviously wasn't a great performance, but again we're looking at inning-eaters here only.
Gibson was always really just a pitcher who ate innings, he really never looked like an ace at any point throughout his career. His best season came with the Minnesota Twins in the 2018 season. That season, he pitched to a 3.62 ERA/4.13 FIP, with 8.2 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 32 games and 196.2 innings pitched. Even here, it was clear that he really wasn't an ace. He looked like a solid mid-rotation arm however, more-so than a bottom of the rotation arm.
The Miami Marlins need to sign an inning-eating starting pitcher and there's not much out there at this point. Kyle Gibson is surely one of the best options out of there and it would make perfect sense for The Fish to sign him. I guess we'll find out who will be signed in the next few weeks.
