We have more news on a developing situation. Many fans were unhappy about the trade last year, unfortunately overrating his actual real world value. That said, we now have more information on the New York Yankees pursuing former Miami Marlins 2B and current San Diego Padres DH Luis Arraez. After recent reports to the contrary, It now looks like that Arraez may end up staying with San Diego for the 2025 season.
Former Miami Marlins hitter Luis Arraez might not be traded.
The Miami Marlins are yet to bring in any free agents, but the off-season isn't over yet. It's OK to still have hope that something will happen before it's said and done. Luis Arraez is currently the San Diego Padres Designated Hitter. There were reports yesterday that the New York Yankees were after Arraez presumably for their vacant second base position.
Gleyber Torres has recently signed with the Detroit Tigers, so the Bronx Bombers need a replacement. That replacement could be Arraez, though it would be odd for the team to take such a big defensive hit at the position. There is a reason why Arraez is currently a DH, he's a liability in the field and is better off focusing on his one true skill: contact hitting.
We now are hearing reports that the New York Yankees may not be pursuing Arraez at all. It would make sense as his defense is once again a pretty big liability. Of course, it's possible that the team is willing to take a defensive hit for one season, just to replace Torres for the season.
I'm not sure if the report is truly accurate. There aren't that many second basemen or third basemen available, so that could be a way to bring his trade value down, lowering the price that New York would have to pay in order to acquire him to the team.
I would not be surprised if his New York's lead-off hitter in 2025 after all. Either way, it's doubtful that Luis Arraez will be in San Diego in 2026 and he's not coming back to the Miami Marlins at all.
