The Miami Marlins shutout the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0 on Saturday night. While that was going down, their minor league feeder system split their four games.
Triple-A Pacific Coast League
New Orleans Baby Cakes 13, Omaha Storm Chasers 2
The Baby Cakes (14-15) beat down the Storm Chasers (11-18) with 4,505 in Werner Park. Here’s the official MILB.COM recap.
Ben Meyer was nearly perfect on the bump. He earned a GameScore of 80, striking out five over seven innings. He allowed one run on two hits, and didn’t walk any batters. He got 60-of-85 pitches into the strike zone.
Tomas Telis led the Baby Cakes with four hits and three RBI. Collecting three hits also was Eric Campbell (one homer, three RBI), JT Riddle (two RBI), and Jonathan Rodriguez (one RBI). Magneuris Sierra (three RBI) and Austin Nola (one RBI) collected two hits apiece. Riddle finished a homer short of the cycle.
Sean Burnett pitched a scoreless eighth for New Orleans. Chris Mazza gave up one hit in the ninth, a solo homer to Jack Lopez.
Double-A Southern League
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 0, Biloxi Shuckers 1
Cody Poteet tossed a quality start for the Shrimp (12-16) against Biloxi in front of 2,723 at MGM Park. It wasn’t enough though, as five Biloxi (19-10) pitchers combined for a shutout. The Shrimp could only muster three hits in total. Story here.
Eric Jagielo, Cade Gotta, and Cito Culver each finished with a single. Gotta and Culver also reached base via free pass, Isan Diaz walked twice.
Poteet (2-2, 3.82) struck out six and allowed one run on four hits and four walks. James Buckelew pitched two scoreless innings despite allowing five baserunners.
The only run in the game was in Biloxi’s half of the third, on a Corey Ray double.
High-A Florida State League
Jupiter Hammerheads 2, Fort Myers Miracle 1
Jupiter (21-8) outhit Fort Myers (13-16) 7-to-6 in their 2-1 win on Saturday evening with 1,074 at CenturyLink Sports Complex. Robert Dugger (3-1, 2.60) struck out five in six innings, walking three and allowing three hits and one unearned run. Dylan Lee struck out three in two frames, and Lukas Schiraldi saved his sixth game with a scoreless ninth.
Chris Hoo scored in the third on a Mason Davis sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Hammerheads lead. Jupiter made it 2-0 in the next inning on a Eric Gutierrez RBI-double. Fort Myers got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Hoo passed ball.
Single-A South Atlantic League
Greensboro Grasshoppers 1, Greenville Drive 2
The Hoppers (15-12) and the Drive (6-23) traded zeroes until the bottom of the seventh with 5,813 on hand at First National Bank Field. This game featured the best “first pitch” I’ve ever seen.
Greensboro struck first, with their seventh inning run. Micah Brown crossed the plate on Juan Florentino‘s wild pitch.
The Grasshoppers lead wouldn’t last long, though. Brady Puckett uncorked a wild pitch of his own in the eighth, allowing Frankie Rios and Lorenzo Cedrola to score. Nobody had an RBI in the game.

Each team finished with seven hits. B.J. Lopez had two singles and a walk, and Isael Soto walked twice and hit a double. Puckett pitched well aside from his two wild pitches. He struck out seven in 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk.
