2 Miami Marlins hitters nominated for Silver Sluggers!
The Miami Marlins are getting ready for the off-season and should begin to get serious about free agents. In the meantime, The Fish are hoping to collect some awards. Two players in fact have been nominated for Silver Slugger awards. Those players are second baseman Luis Arraez and designated hitter Jorge Soler. Will they win the awards?
Two Miami Marlins players have been nominated for Silver Slugger awards.
Second baseman Luis Arraez has been a great acquisition for the Miami Marlins. He batted .354/.393/.469 with 10 home runs and 69 RBI, in 147 games and 574 AB. He even flirted with a .400 batting average for most of the season. The slugger was worth 4.9 WAR and should receive some votes for the National League MVP award this season. Arraez is nominated for the second base Silver Slugger award.
Who is Arraez's competition? The Atlanta Braves' Ozzie Albies and the Arizona Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte are his competition. Albies is batting .280/.336/.513, with 33 home runs and 109 RBI in 148 games and 596 AB. He was worth 4.7 WAR for that performance. Ketel Marte batted .276/.358/.485, with 25 home runs and 82 RBI in 150 games and 569 AB. He was worth 4.9 WAR, the same as Luis Arraez. It should be clear that Arraez is the best of the group, but I could see them unfortunately giving the award to Albies as well.
Jorge Soler batted .250/.341/.512 with 36 home runs and 75 RBI, in 137 games and 504 AB. He had a strong platform season, and was worth 1.8 WAR for that performance. His competition for the award are the Philadelphia Phillies' Bryce Harper, the Los Angeles Dodgers' J.D. Martinez and Atlanta's Marcell Ozuna.
Bryce Harper played first base as well, and batted .293/.401/.499 with 21 home runs and 72 RBI, in 126 games and 457 AB. He was worth 3.7 WAR. Marcell Ozuna batted .274/.346/.558, with 40 home runs and 100 RBI in 144 games and 530 AB. He was worth 3.3 WAR. J.D. Martinez batted .271/.321/.572, with 33 home runs and 103 RBI in 113 games and 432 AB. He was worth 1.9 WAR. Jorge Soler had the worst WAR out of all of them, and to be honest I expect Harper to win the award.
