The Trade Deadline was seen as a win for the Miami Marlins by most outlets. This is despite a franchise-altering trade, but because of multiple great trades by The Fish, trades that were seen as wins for the team. Even the strongest Peter Bendix critics have to admit that he knows what he's doing at this point. So why are some fans frustrated?
The Miami Marlins have a complicated history.
The Miami Marlins won more World Series in the last 27 years than 90% of all Major League teams. The two Series won in 1997 and 2003, were only matched or improved upon by a handful of teams... the New York Yankees won 4 (1998, 1999, 2000, 2009); the Boston Red Sox won 4 (2004, 2007, 2013, 2018); the San Francisco Giants won 3 (2010, 2012, 2014); the Houston Astros won 2 (2017, 2022); the St. Louis Cardinals won 2 (2006 and 2011). That's 5 teams. Everyone else either won just one (Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves and others) or none (New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays and others...)
Despite this success, The Fish have mostly missed playoffs and have actually never won he division. Constant ownership changes and rebuilds have created a bad reputation for the team as well. Whether it's Jeffrey Loria or Bruce Sherman, the fanbase has become accustomed to rebuilds and disappointments.
Many Marlins fans were happy with the Deadline trades, there were some who weren't, their reasons were more that it was yet another sell-off. Well, what should The Fish have done instead? It made no sense to buy during a lost season. It also made no sense to do nothing. The only right thing to do was to sell and rebuild the farm.
Part of being a fan is dealing with the negatives. Loyalty however is important and is very much rewarding. The inspiring story of that South Korean Kansas City Royals fan is a perfect example. Unlike us Miami Marlins fans, he didn't have the luxury of seeing his team win the World Series for a very long time. The sell-off made sense and I have faith in the new leadership.
