Miami Marlins notes: Emmanuel Rivera claimed; WBC
The Miami Marlins made a surprise move designating a starter for assignment. This was done to make room for a game-changing promotion. We now have some more news on that. We also have some interesting news on events coming to loanDepot Park. Let's just say that a major tournament will be happening there in two years. Are you ready for all of the news coming your way?
Some interesting Marlins notes this week.
Let's start with Emmanuel Rivera being claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Rivera briefly started for the Miami Marlins this season at third base. He was worth just -0.6 WAR and batted a poor .214/.294/.269, with a home run and 15 RBI in 96 games and 201 AB. It was obviously a bad enough performance that The Fish had no reason to keep giving him AB's. Rivera didn't have much of a track record either, having batted .247/.304/.380 from 2021-2023 for the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Fish naturally designated Emmanuel Rivera for assignment and he ended up being claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Despite a great farm, it seems to me that they're not run very competently. It seems to be a fair conclusion based on their trades. As well as their lack of improving their bullpen. I'm not sure why they need him with all of their hitting prospects, but I guess they want him for depth.
So what event is coming to loanDepot Park in 2026. If you think it's the World Cup and that Lionel Messi and Argentina are coming to town...you'd be mistaken. The greatest player of his sport will be leading Argentina to more success elsewhere. We will however be getting the World Baseball Classic! The Baseball version of the World Cup has seen some success and will be coming back to loanDepot Park.
Pool D featuring The Netherlands, a mystery team that has to qualify, Israel, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic will be played here. That's not all. The Quarterfinals, Semifinals and the Championship game will all be played at loanDepot Park. This should be exciting and we'll see if Japan can successfully defend their title from 2023, or if the USA or another team will unseat them.
