Miami Marlins notes: Garrett, Andriese, Pereda
The Fish make more roster moves
It's been a tough week for the Miami Marlins and it only just began! At least we can hope that at some point The Fish will start improving the team long-term. We can even already start expecting a selling off at the Trade Deadline. In the meantime, let's start to look at some recent transactions and updates on injured players.
The Miami Marlins are continuing to shuffle the roster around this season.
Let's start by talking about the player that The Fish designated for assignment...right-handed reliever Matt Andriese. The 34 year old has a career 4.64 ERA/4.23 FIP, with 8.4 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9. That's just pretty mediocre. In 3 games and 5.0 innings pitched for The Fish so far, he has a 5.40 ERA/6.03 FIP, with 10.8 K/9 and 0.0 BB/9. It remains to be seen if he will reject the assignment and choose to hit free agency instead.
The Miami Marlins also placed C Christian Bethancourt on the 10-day IL due to a viral illness. His replacement is C Jhonny Pereda. Bethancourt...hasn't been very good so far. He has a .000/.043/.000 batting line for the season in 11 games and 22 AB. His career batting line is .227/.257/.354 and it's doubtful that the 32 year old can ever improve on that. While I do wish him a speedy recovery, I don't see the Fish missing him that much.
Jhonny Pereda hasn't played at the Majors so far. The 27 year old has a career .258/.346/.341 batting line in the Minor Leagues. I don't have high expectations for him, but hopefully he can prove me wrong. In other news, SP Braxton Garrett had some type of setback during his rehab back. He currently reported as to having a "dead arm". He will undergo more testing and may not be coming back this week as initially expected.
The biggest news here is that the Miami Marlins may be without Braxton Garrett for even longer now. I'm hoping that there's no serious issues and that he will in fact be back fine shortly. Hopefully the catching situation improves as well.
