The Miami Marlins have another lock for the rotation now
I wrote that the Miami Marlins can play spoiler and that's eactly what the team did against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday! The American League Wild Card race is still going on, but Ryan Weathers showed up and bounced back from his previous post-injury start that went poorly. With some potential problems for next year's rotation, there's anothe rspot that seems to already have been set.
Ryan Weathers earned a spot in next year's Miami Marlins rotation.
Next year's Miami Marlins rotation looks loaded. While inning limits are a concern, Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez and Jesus Luzardo will be back to front it. This is an imposing top three and that's already a very promising start to the season. It gets better though, after last night's start and due to his work the whole season, it's safe to say that Ryan Weathers earned the right to be in the rotation next season as well. This would cover four out of five rotation spots to start the season!
Weathers was pretty good in the game against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. He gave up just one run in the five innings that he pitched. He gave up six hits and the only negatives were him having just two strikeouts. He was however able to only have two walks. For the season, he now has a 3.81 ERA/4.26 FIP, with 8.3 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 15 games and 80.1 innings pitched. While the FIP leaves something to be desired, it was a pretty solid season for him. Keep in mind that he's a number four starter at this point, and isn't expected to be an ace or anything like that.
Ryan Weathers was basically a steal to acquire from the San Diego Padres back in 2023. I'm sure San Diego wishes that they didn't do the trade now. The former top prospect clearly needed time to put it all together, but he finally did. That's great news for the Miami Marlins as he's quickly becoming a cog in the rotation going forward. He's under team control through the 2028 season via arbitration.
